Image as Data / Data as Image – John Gerrard on NFTs

This event happened 27 April 2021

For theVOV Unites series, world-renowned Irish Artist John Gerrard will explore the future of NFTs and their position within the changing landscape of the art world. Having worked in ‘digital art’ for the last two decades, Gerrard will discuss the moral, societal, political and environmental implications of the NFT and discuss his new work ‘Western Flag (NFT)’ dedicated to the support of soil restoration and post petroleum agricultural practices in Ireland.

Bio:

In the contemporary world, simulations are no longer just secondhand copies, but are increasingly both engine and autopilot of leisure, economy, politics and warfare. Gerrard’s work offers us portraits of this world through the prism of its own technological medium: using the very software that enables the operations of entertainment, industry and warfare.’
